This post is based at Manchester University and relates mainly to the
NEXT UK census. Its connection with historical GIS is that I am one of
the grant holders on the CAIRD project, and it will be exploring the use
of the Data Documentation Initiative's metadata standard for describing
the MEANING of statistical data. DDI metadata is one of the main
foundations of the GB Historical GIS, and lies behind the Vision of
Britain web site's ability to present a very large body of statistical
data graphically, so the CIRD project will be exploring the
applicability of our approach with new data.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CLOSING DATE FOR THIS VACANCY HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO
THE 1ST OF APRIL
Mimas is a national data centre supported by JISC and the ESRC and
hosted by The University of Manchester. The Census Dissemination Unit
(CDU - www.cdu.mimas.ac.uk), based within Mimas, provides access to, and
support for the use of the aggregate statistics outputs from the 1971,
1981, 1991 and 2001 UK censuses. The CDU also provides a variety of
additional census-related datasets and services to its users.
The CAIRD (Census Aggregate Information Resource Demonstrator) Project
aims to create a demonstrator system that will combine data and metadata
from the UK 2001 Census through the use of developments in
open-standards structured XML, and XML-aware database systems to create
a machine-readable, application-ready online service. The main aim of
the CAIRD project is to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach in
order to encourage adoption of similar methods by the national census
agencies for aggregate outputs from the UK 2011 Census.
You should have: a good honours degree in Computer Science or a related
discipline or experience in an equivalent role; strong IT skills;
experience of manipulating large and complex datasets; use of Excel for
data manipulation including the use of functions; experience of XML and
related technologies (such as XSLT); Microsoft SQL Server experience. In
addition you will have excellent organisational skills and a flexible,
enthusiastic and proactive approach to work.
