Subject: Marker stone?
Hi folks
Can anyone help me with identifying a dressed stone marker that has
turned up in a garden in Cambridgeshire, approx 100m S of church in
village of Soham?
Its dressed clunch, square in section, with two smooth sides and two
rough, engraved with "HT" and "V" on the two sides, in a script that
looks 18th/19th century-ish. Its about 12 inches high, and 6 inches in
diameter. It must be some sort of marker stone, and we wondered about
an early benchmark or something similar? There is nothing on the 1st
edition OS maps that would appear to correspond.
I've had a quick scan on the internet and nothing similar leaps out at
me, and I am not sure of the meaning of the HT and V. I can provide a
picture if anyone wants a closer look.
All answers on the back of a postcard please
Thanks
Sarah
