What operating system are you using? If Linux try running "uname -a" without the double-quotes. If it does not tell x86_64 (but i585 or i686) somewhere in the output, you are running in a 32 bit environment, and then user adressable memory will be somewhere between 2 and 3 at the extrem case 4GB (ignore this). In that case adding swap ar RAM will not help at all. Try a 64 bit Linux system instead (the core 2 duo sgould support that easily).
