Conference Description
Armed conflicts cause immense damage. By drastically reducing the quality of
life and harming human health and biological diversity, they jeopardize
development and threaten the survival of communities in violence stricken
countries.
For the international community, the prevention of armed conflicts and their
impacts remains a momentous challenge which has yet to be met. The organizers
of the seminar of Kinshasa 2008 "Armed Conflicts in Africa:
Their Impacts on the Quality of Life, Human Health and Biological Diversity"-
which is held in a difficult African context marked by extreme poverty, weak
governance and the multiplication of armed conflicts - wish to stimulate a
real reflection on this crucial issue, which threatens the sustainable
development of African countries.
OBJECTIVE
The seminar's objective is to mobilize and sensitize countries and
international organizations on the importance of the preservation of the
quality of life, human health and biological diversity in Africa, in peace,
conflict and post-conflict periods.
This objective will be achieved by presenting tools and methods for impact
assessment of armed conflicts in Africa, and by formulating concrete and
useful recommendations that will help stakeholders to manage crises and to
integrate environmental degradation into their strategies.
THEMES
The environmental consequences of armed conflicts are felt at the local,
regional and global levels. They linger long after the end of the hostilities,
and yet, they are inadequately approached, poorly evaluated, and even
underestimated. Hence the focus of Kinshasa seminar 2008 on the impacts of
armed conflicts in Africa on the quality of life, human health and biological
diversity.
This main theme breaks down into four (4) areas:
? Tools and methods for impact assessment of armed conflicts;
? Assessment of the impacts suffered by communities and, more specifically,
human health during armed conflict periods: What would be the best approach to
restoring environmental governance?
? Biological diversity conservation and restoration during the processes of
reconstruction and development post conflict;
? Tools and methods of assessment and analysis of the impacts of armed
conflicts on the quality of life.
