New work: 'Lenses'
Sunday 16 March, 13.30pm - 5pm
York St John University, Lord Mayor's Walk, York. YO31 7EX, Free
Dawn Scarfe presents 'Lenses': a multi-speaker installation that
explores the sculptural possibilities of sound radiation from wine
glasses. Listeners are encouraged to move around the work to explore
how their position affects their experience of the piece. Inspiring
the work is an interest in the bright, reflective quality of glass,
and its potential as a 'lens' to focus and propagate sound. It
encourages the phenomenon of sympathetic vibration by playing sounds
taken from the glasses back through small speakers hovering over the
rims. It is informed by the history of our understanding of such
acoustic effects, which in the absence of modern scientific
explanation was linked to mysterious and occult forces. An additional
influence is the experimental work of Seventeenth Century scientists
such as Robert Hooke who used musical instruments as means of
extending the range of the senses and demonstrating physical laws.
This event is part of SightSonic, an international digital arts
festival based in York.

SightSonic aims to present and promote art forms that have digital
technology at the heart of the creative process. The festival was
established in 2000 to celebrate the artistic potential of
contemporary technology and takes place, over a weekend, in venues
throughout the city.
SightSonic presents work that demonstrates innovation and has digital
technology at the heart of the creative process. SightSonic is
committed to bringing leading artists (both national and
international) to York, whilst fostering the development of work by
new and emerging artists. The proportion of established to emerging
artists represented in the programme changes every year - the core of
the festival is work of international significance.
The programme is an inspiring mix of all art forms, created or
realised by digital means. SightSonic promotes and showcases divergent
artistic events ranging from audio concerts, video and film
screenings, gallery installations, open air performances and on-line
work.
