14-18th July 2008, China in the World, Postgraduate Research Summer School
Centre for East Asian Studies, University of Bristol, UK
Funded by the European Union and in collaboration with the Worldwide
University Network (WUN), China in the World: Postgraduate Research Summer
School provides research training in Chinese studies for PhD students and
junior researchers from EU member and associated states, China and the USA.
The theme of the 2008 Summer School is China, Europe and the World. It aims
to enhance research approaches and techniques of postgraduate research
students and junior researchers. The main topics include:
- Core theme: China's global and regional integration (including
interaction with Europe).
- Approaches to China's global integration: Political Economy, Development,
Politics and Social Policy.
- Methodologies: Comparative Methodology and Paradigm Shifts
- Hands-on methods training: (a) surveys, questionnaires; (b) using
archival material
Eligibility of participants:
Applicants should be either studying for a PhD or an equivalent research
degree, or junior researchers holding at least a BA in Humanities or Social
Sciences with more than four years of research experience in contemporary
Chinese studies and relevant disciplines. It is essential for participants
to have good command of both English, which is the language of instruction
of the Summer School, and Chinese.
Applications are invited from:
- Postgraduate students and junior researchers of European nationality,
i.e. the nationals of EU member states or EU associated states, studying or
working anywhere in the world;
- postgraduate students and junior researchers of any nationality studying
or working at European universities / institutes;
- postgraduate students and junior researchers studying or working at the
Worldwide University Network member Universities (WUN) -- Nanjing (China),
Zhejiang (China), Illinois at Urbana Champaign (US), California at San
Diego (US), Washington at Seattle (US), Wisconsin-Madison (US),
Pennsylvania State (US) and Sydney (AU);
Postgraduates, post-docs and junior researchers at other institutions may
be considered.
Fully funded places will be allocated according to a quota based on
European and non-European categories. There are a small number of
self-funded places to be offered to research students and junior scholars
who have the nationality of an EU or associated state but who are not
selected for funded places.
