Hello all,
UCD is offering PhD scholarships in what it calls Global Irish Studies, and these are of interest to (and are likely to have some of them claimed by) archaeologists. Note that the deadline for applications is April 18.
The scholarships are being offered in four research strands, three of which are of archaeological interest, two of them (the first two below) especially so:
1) Footprints of Ireland: heritage and landscape [the main thrust of this is prehistoric, but....]
2) Irish identities from the seventeenth century: cultural and linguistic expression
3) State and society: historical development and contemporary challenges
Now, the web-site invites prospective applicants to contact either Brian Jackson or Tony Fahey in UCD, but may I suggest that Historical Archaeologists among you contact me first (or at least simultaneously) if you're interested. Applications for funding which are submitted without having first been seen at school level and discussed with a potential supervisor generally don’t do well.
Given that this is funded through UCD’s new Global Irish Institute, applicants interested in the archaeology of the Irish overseas should certainly NOT feel discouraged from applying.
UCD Graduate scholarships are for a 3 year structured PhD and preference will be given to candidates commencing year one of the structured PhD Degree in September 2008. Details are posted up on the UCD Graduate Studies website at http://www.ucd.ie/pgstudy/prospective/gis_scholarships.htm and the UCD College of Arts and Celtic Studies Graduate School website address at http://www.ucd.ie/artsceltic/graduateschool.htm.
