National University of Ireland, Galway
Stokes Professorship of Bioinformatics
The University has recently been awarded funding from Science Foundation
Ireland (SFI) to create a new Chair in Bioinformatics. The holder of
the Chair will provide leadership and direction in the broad area of
Bioinformatics, and will have experience in both methodological and
applied work. He/she will be a leading researcher in an area of
Bioinformatics, with a strong background in Mathematics or Statistics
and experience in the mathematical and/or computational modelling and
analysis of biological systems. She/he will be expected to contribute
significantly to the priority research programmes of the University, in
particular to the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Sciences
(NCBES) and the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI). The Chair
will reside in the new School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied
Mathematics and it is envisaged that the holder will be an important
member of that School and will provide a bridge between the mathematical
and biological sciences. He/she will be expected to develop and direct
new interdisciplinary Masters and PhD programmes in Bioinformatics and
to contribute to the development and provision of new undergraduate
courses, bringing together staff from cognate areas. In accordance with
the terms of the Stokes initiative, the postholder will be required to
