Project title: Examination of retinal microvasculature in British children
of South Asian, African-Caribbean and White European origin.
We have a PhD studentship which would be particularly suitable for a
candidate with previous training and experience in epidemiology or
biostatistics (ideally to MSc level) and/or optometry. The project involves
the investigation of retinal vascular patterns in a population-based study
of 1,000 British children of South Asian, African-Caribbeans and White
European origin. Key questions will include the extent of ethnic
differences in retinal vascular patterns, the relation of retinal vascular
patterns to other markers of vascular structure and function, and their
relations to risk factors for vascular disease (blood pressure, blood lipids
etc). The project will be supervised by a research team with expertise in
epidemiology, medical statistics, optometry (St. George's, University of
London) and retinal image analysis (Kingston University, London). The 3
year studentship will cover a student stipend at UK Research Council levels
plus UK/EU resident fees. For candidates from outside the EU, the overseas
fees will not be fully covered and fees in excess of HEU levels will have to
be met by the applicant. Further details and application forms are
available at http://www.swlacademicnetwork.ac.uk/ (closing date 7th April
2008). Interested applicants can contact Dr Chris Owen (email:
[log in to unmask]) for further information.
