University of Exeter
Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Statistics for Climate Science
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Starting salary is between £23,002 and £30,013 depending on level of
appointment.
Available full time for a fixed term of three years from 1 July 2008
or as soon as possible thereafter.
The National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) seeks to appoint a
Research Fellow or Associate Research Fellow to conduct statistical
research that will contribute to the aims of its Climate Directorate.
The post is based in Exeter Climate Systems, a rapidly growing centre
at the University of Exeter's Mathematics Research Institute, and
affords a rare opportunity to develop a research career at the
interface between the statistical and climate sciences.
The Fellow will develop a research programme and collaborate
proactively with statisticians and climate scientists in order to
advance understanding, modelling and prediction of the climate system.
Examples of suitable research areas include modelling changes in risk
from extreme weather events, validating and emulating climate models,
identifying sources of predictability, and constructing probabilistic
predictions of climate change and regional impacts. The Fellow will
also contribute towards the promotion of statistics among NCAS
scientists.
Applicants must have demonstrated talents for developing and applying
statistical methods to address scientific questions, and for written
and spoken scientific communication. Applicants must also have an
ability and desire to collaborate with climate scientists and to grow
a research programme by writing grant proposals and supervising
research students. Applicants must have a PhD or directly equivalent
experience in statistics, or should expect to be awarded their PhD
before starting the post.
Further information about NCAS and Exeter Climate Systems is available
at <www.ncas.ac.uk> and <www.secam.ex.ac.uk/xcs>. Please contact Dr

To apply, send a CV with contact details of three referees and a
covering letter explaining your suitability for the post to Dr
Christopher Ferro by email or by post to 'School of Engineering,
Computing and Mathematics', University of Exeter, Harrison Building,
North Park Road, Exeter, EX4 4QF, United Kingdom. Please quote
reference N1458. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in late
April.
Closing date is 9am on 14 April 2008.
