Introduction to the Expenditure and Food Survey
Thursday 19 June 2008
Kantorovich Building, Humanities Bridgeford Street, University of Manchester
This meeting is designed to provide an overview of the Expenditure and Food
Survey (EFS), including its diary and food sections, and some examples of
research applications. The workshop sessions will provide an opportunity to
gain hands-on familiarity with the data. It will be particularly valuable
for new users.

Introduction to government microdata: focus on consumption
Wednesday 30 April 2008
Methods and Data Institute, Nottingham University
Our roles as consumers and our patterns of consumption are central to who we
are, what we do and our consumer society. ESDS Government surveys allow
researchers to look at many different areas of consumption, for example,
health and consumption (lifestyle factors such as eating, drinking, smoking,
exercise) and environmental consumption (the products we consume and our
choices of transportation).
This introductory seminar is aimed at those with little or no experience of
microdata from government surveys, or those with some experience of these
surveys who require an introduction to the consumption content of the datasets.

New ESDS Government guide
ESDS Government has produced a new guide, Working with survey files: using
hierarchical data, matching files and pooling data, which can be found at
http://www.esds.ac.uk/government/resources/analysis/.
This guide introduces the concepts of units of analysis and hierarchical
data. It explains procedures in SPSS and Stata that can be used to work with
datasets with different levels of hierarchy within single files, as well as
how to combine files where different levels of hierarchy are stored across
multiple files (i.e. a ‘database’ of data ‘tables’). Other related
procedures considered include how to combine files to increase sample sizes.

Approved Researcher access to more detailed social survey microdata
From 1 April 2008 access to ONS Special Licence data will fall under a new
legal framework set out in the Statistics and Registration Act. Users
requiring ONS SL data will have to be accredited by the UK Statistics
Authority as an Approved Researcher.
Applications under the new framework can be made from 17 March. Users will
then be able to order the data from UKDA/ESDS in the usual way and will be
directed to new Approved Researcher forms for completion.
To apply for accreditation a user completes forms that require:
evidence that s/he is a fit and proper person and details about the purpose
of the research
an online order for the data
a signed declaration that he/she understands the confidentiality obligations
owed to those data including its physical security.
