Statistical Geneticist / Mathematician Epidemiologist
MRC Band 4 Salary £29,329 - £35,009 pa inclusive
London W12
(21 months fixed-term with possibility of additional 2 years)
The Genomic and Molecular Medicine Group enjoys
an international reputation for its genetic and
biochemical studies on the mechanisms that
control blood fat levels, and is uniquely placed
to fully utilise high-powered computing and
bioinformatic facilities within the MRC Clinical
Sciences Centre and Imperial College London to
analyse our substantial datasets.
The post-holder will interact with the groups’
dedicated mathematician and external
collaborators, including Professor John
Whittaker, who has specialist expertise in
statistical genetics methods development. The
post-holder will join a research environment
containing a critical mass of investigators,
including people in the groups of Professors Tim
Aitman, Vyse and Froguel, who are performing
state-of-the-art analyses on genome-wide
association and microarray expression datasets,
The GMM group is investigating the contribution
of variation within several large genomic regions
on the risk of transmitting the most common form
of hyperlipidemia, Familial Combined
Hyperlipidemia (FCHL), and has assembled the
largest collection of families to do so. FCHL is
characterised by abnormal blood fat levels and a
very high risk of premature coronary heart
disease. The successful candidate will have the
opportunity to use and develop a broad range of
modern statistical tools and models to identify
by linkage, linkage disequilibrium and microarray
analyses the genetic lesions increasing the risk
of developing this complex, highly atherogenic, genetic disorder.
Geneticists/Epidemiologists with expertise in the
analyses of large datasets or mathematicians
wishing to acquire expertise in biological
research are particularly encouraged to apply.
The post is available immediately for 21 months
in the first instance, with the possibility of
funding for an additional 2 years.
