Division of Epidemiology, Public Health and Primary Care
The Division of Epidemiology, Public Health and Primary Care (EPHPC) is offering five PhD studentships to start in October 2008, four 3-year and one 4-year programme. Applications are invited from highly motivated candidates with a degree in a relevant discipline. Research projects are available in the areas of epidemiology, including infectious disease epidemiology, public health, primary health care and general practice, biostatistics, statistical genetics and health services research.
One 4-year and one 3-year Home/EU PhD Studentships (MRC Funded)
The Division has one 4-year and one 3-year Capacity Building Studentship funded by the MRC. The studentship will pay Home/EU course fees and a stipend of £16,700. Owing to funding restrictions applications from non-Home/EU candidates cannot be considered. Non-UK applicants will be eligible for fees only.
4 year project:
Biostatistical modelling of genetic and environmental correlates of growth patterns leading to obesity.
The project will involve analysis of data from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort studies of individuals born during 1966 and 1986, whose health has since been followed up and genetic data are now also becoming available. The successful applicant will have a degree in Statistics or a related subject such as mathematics, computer science or population genetics. The first year of the studentship can include taking the MSc in Modern Epidemiology. 3-year project:
Bayesian multivariate space-time models for small-area epidemiological studies investigating risk factors for emerging diseases
The successful candidate will be strongly motivated and capable of independent work and will have a degree in Statistics or a related subject with application to Health research and a MSc in a related area or equivalent experience. 3-year Home/EU PhD Studentships (ESRC funded)
The Division has two 3-year ESRC studentships for candidates who wish to undertake projects within the ESRC remit of 'social statistics, research methods and computing' which is defined at: http://www.esrcsocietytoday.ac.uk/ESRCInfoCentre/opportunities/postgraduate/fundingopportunities/. Candidates should have completed an ESRC recognised Masters course or MPH. The studentship includes full payment of Home/EU fees and an enhanced stipend of £16,000. Owing to funding restrictions applications from non-Home/EU candidates cannot be considered. Non-UK students are eligible for fee only awards from Research Councils.
3-year Home/EU PhD BBSRC CASE Studentship (in partnership with Unilever)
The division has one 3 year Case studentship funded by the BBSRC as part of a collaboration between Unilever and the Biostatistics group in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. The stipend is £14600 with an additional Unilever contribution of £2500. Owing to funding restrictions applications from non-Home/EU candidates cannot be considered. Non-UK applicants will be eligible for fees only. The research title for the project is:
Application of Bayesian methods for Biomarker Evaluation.
The successful candidate will be strongly motivated and capable of independent work and will have a degree in Statistics or related subject and preferably an MSc in Statistics or in a related area or equivalent experience. All students will belong to the Graduate School of Life Sciences and Medicine which provides a full programme of training in research and transferable skills. Students will be based in the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, Infectious Disease Epidemiology, or Primary Care & Social Medicine within the Division of EPHPC.
