As to what you can learn or not when 'reading; English lit, or
whatever (again): well, it's up to 'you.'
But, as you've no doubt learned as you try to write, you simply can't,
much, without lots of reading. Perhaps you took no classes in modern
poetry, or in contemporary Australian, but if you aren't reading a lot
of it (& you'll get lots of advice about what to read here!) I suspect
you'll definitely be having difficulties in figuring out how to find
your way toward your own poetics...
Oops, sorry, my usual rant: real writers read!
