Dear colleague,
As part of an Oxford Brookes Associate Teaching Fellowship, I am
currently doing research into the concept of the 'Master Class'. As you
may know, the delivery of so-called Master Classes has become an
increasingly common feature in Higher Education, both in the UK and
abroad. A Master Class can be characterised as an educational setting in
which a teacher/lecturer of high standing in a specific field of inquiry
teaches a selected individual or small group of students on a specific
matter in more detail than is common in a standard class or studio.
Ideally linking teaching with current research through more intimate,
participatory and reflective means of delivery and assessment, Master
Classes provide an attractive and convenient means to update skills and
knowledge of students within a short but dedicated period of time.
Originally, the concept was mainly associated with the Arts (music,
drama, painting), fields in which Master Classes have long been
considered one of the most effective means of development. Nowadays,
they are organised by scholars from a wide variety of disciplines,
including management, architecture, philosophy, anthropology and
physics.
My research aims to examine the pedagogic development and scope of the
Master Class concept and to identify and understand its diversity in
terms of scope, focus, delivery and assessment.
My question is if anyone knows of any such Master Classes being
organised in the fields of social policy and social work? If so, I would
be interested to learn more about them and to get into contact with the
staff members who organise them. Any information that you can provide on
this matter, including knowledge you may have of Master Classes (or
events of a similar nature) run at other institutions (now as well as in
the past) would be much appreciated.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
With best wishes,
