2. ‘Irish Interculturalism and Indian Secularism: Intersecting Transnational
Formations’. This doctoral project (see description below) will be
supervised by Dr Rashmi Sawhney in CTMP, whose interests are in the areas of
visual culture, South Asian studies, postcolonial and gender studies.
Much research on Ireland-India relations has been framed through
postcolonial theory where colonial history offers comparativity between the
literary, political and philosophical traditions of the two countries.
However, processes of migration and globalization necessitate a
re-consideration of relationships between the near and far − contextualising
translocal inequalities through a ‘worldly mode of investigation’ (Back,
2007). This project extends the research gaze on Irish interculturalism and
Indian secularism through an ethnographic framing, drawing upon experiences
of Indian immigrants in Ireland. The project’s central concern is to open up
dialogue between Irish interculturalism and Indian secularism through
historicised, evidence/practice-based research, presenting transnational
narratives of inclusion and marginalisation.
