Dear Otto,
> What are the health effects after consumption,
I have a 'coffee table' type book by Michael Jordan (1997 'Plants of
Mystery and Magic' London:Blandford) where he notes that the effects of
ergotism thus:
'The symptoms begin with swelling of the limbs and the sense of extremes
of heat and cold..great pain and the sensation of 'ants running under the
skin'...initial symptoms lead to muscle spasm, convulsions and
paralysis...ravenous appetite...the affected areas become numb..the skin
blue and cold or cyanosed...' page 112
His ergot entry is two pages long and he mentions William Tyndale, 15th
and 16 th century woodcuts and French nunneries as well as St Anthony of
Padua. Frustratingly the author has not cited his sources.
I'll forward your message onto the 'Medicinal Receipts' list because I am
also interested in finding out where the original sources of this
information can be found. I'll post back what I find out.
best wishes,
Lisa
