You're thinking about whether to stay with an older version of Office or
upgrade to the latest but why not evaluate the advantages/disadvantages
of a switch to e.g. OpenOffice?
The total cost of ownership of OpenOffice will probably compare well
with M$ Office 2007. Since you have submitted yourself to the M$ total
lock-in by adopting their enterprise tools (which have poor
interoperability with non-M$ products) the biggest item on the minus
side would be the need to rethink some of the groupware tools you use.
However, there are potentially huge savings to made in the long term by
replacing those too.
OpenOffice is available for Windows, Macs, Solaris and Linux and has an
almost identical user interface on all operating systems so it's
especially economic in terms of user support in organisations that run a
lot of different platforms.

P.S. What's the VLE angle to this thread?
