Hi Rob,
At this stage can I give a shameless plug for

(I've taken the liberty of copying this reply there, hopefully before the
discussion gets too involved on TLT-Officers :-)
This has been a topic of discussion a few times (look back in the archives
at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/ELECTRONIC-VOTING-SYSTEMS.html).
At Surrey we've adopted a library loan system to individual students. See
http://www.alt.ac.uk/altc2007/timetable/abstract.php?abstract_id=1273. The
PowerPoint shows more details the distribution method we are employing.
Building them into chairs is an obvious solution but we couldn't find any
suitable supplier of such systems (they seem a thing of the past now the
handsets are so small and light) and the cost of running super-low voltage
to each seat would make it uneconomic unless it was a new build.
Hope this helps.
