Fierce! - the internationally acclaimed performance festival - is looking for
artists to present their work at this year's festival... but this will be no
ordinary festival...
Fierce! achieved a milestone last year. A decade of stop-you-in-your-tracks
live art events and performances culminated in our biggest festival ever. But
it couldn't end there. We're moving into new territory. We want the Fierce
festival experience to go beyond the boundaries and touch the lives of people
who never engage with live art and maybe did not believe that they could or
should.
So... for Fierce 11, we plan something a little different - WIKIFEST - a
festival of live art and performances curated by the public! Yep... that's
right, the programme for WIKIFEST is going to let members of the public
choose what they want to see as part of Fierce 11!
Fierce has a reputation for being brave: we've never shied away from a
challenge or from working with technology in a whole new way. It's exciting,
it's a risk and it has to be a great way for you, as artists, to really
engage with your audiences.
But we need new work to put in the frame first - We'll provide the venues,
but we need you to submit work that you'd like to perform as part of this
festival. And you need to be brave, too, because it's going to be up to the
public, via the world wide web, to choose which 11 events, from a longlist of
approximately 30, will be programmed as part of Fierce! 11.
This is how it works...
We have reserved a whole range of spaces at Birmingham Hippodrome, Patrick
Centre and Warwick Arts Centre, from studios to conventional performance
spaces, to foyers, cupboards, dressing rooms and spaces on the roads,
pavements and piazza outside. We need work to fill these spaces.
We want to hear from you if you are an artist, performer, film-maker or
company with work that will be ready to be performed or shown during the late
May bank holiday weekend. That's 23 - 26 May 2008.
In the first instance, we need you to complete the attached form telling us
about the piece you want to submit. From all of the submissions we'll select
the final 30 that will go onto the Fierce WIKIFEST website. It will then be
up to the public - all those people who visit the WIKIFEST site - to vote for
the ones they want to see programmed into the WIKIFEST proper in May. (Bear
in mind that for our Name In Lights project last year, where the public had
to choose someone who deserved to have their name made into a gigantic
Hollywood-style light installation, we had over 2 million visitors to the
site, so the potential for people hearing about you and what you do is
considerable).
There are one or two things you'll need to provide along with your
submission:
* A one line pitch (a strapline that's going to hook us all, if you
like) for your project
* An all-inclusive fee that covers all performance, technical and
other costs. (The overall artists budget for WIKIFEST is £20,000, and this
will need to fund the fee for 11 pieces of work, so bear in mind that the
more expensive your submission, the less likely it might be to be selected by
the public.)
* Basic technical information and what space requirements you have.
* A 150 word piece of web copy - basically an ad, to whet the
appetites of the people making the decision, and saying a bit more about the
experience they'll get and what to expect from the piece.
* 100 words of background information about you and / or your
company.
* Running time.
* Video footage.
* One strong image which needs to be a minimum size of 160mm x 160mm
at 72dpi and saved in JPG format. (Maximum file size 3MB).
* Audio bites if relevant
Use the attached Submission form. Remember that the competition has rules.
They are attached as well. Do keep it simple and snappy.
So what's the timeline?
Monday 25 February 2008 - deadline for submissions
Monday 10 March - 30 proposals will go live on the WIKIFEST website and the
public can start voting.
All 30 proposals will remain online for the first ten days, and then the
proposal with the least amount of votes will be lost, one each day, until we
have the final 11.
14 April 2008 - the final lineup of artists and events will be announced.
21 - 24 May Performance dates for WIKIFEST
Please do bear in mind this final selection date. We will not be able to tell
you until the 14th April whether your piece has been selected by the public
to go into WIKIFEST in May, so you MUST be able to commit to keeping the
dates 21 - 24 May free if you wish to be considered for the festival.
All 30 shortlisted artists will receive a FREE one day workshop from industry
professionals focusing on developing live art work for festivals, and using
digital technology both as a promotional and performance tool.
Be part of WIKIFEST and Fierce! 11
Fierce takes live art and performance outside of the traditional spaces where
it is normally seen, and brings artists of international renown to places as
diverse as hotels, gentlemen's clubs, swimming pools and ordinary houses as
well as galleries and theatres, taking in everything from contemporary dance
to sonic terror. If you want to be part of a pulsating performance festival
this May; if you can stop an inquisitive, savvy, seen-it-all-before audience
member in their tracks, then show us what you've got.
>From individual experiences of 3 minutes to 18 hour endurance events,
>Fierce! 11 wants you!
