Sonnet: Backward Glances
Sometime after the twentieth of the third month
they went on their way, having spent several days
writing poetry and saying goodbye to their friends,
wearing parenthetical expressions on their faces.
Somewhat confused about the exact dates, their
accounts could not be reconciled. Early enough
that darkness still lingered in the sky, they noted
that even the fishes’ eyes had tears in them. We’ll
text you often, they promised each other, as always.
