You were a child
by Nikos Gatsos
You entered and the house was shining
like the opening of clover leaves
you held the gleaming of the star of evening
captured within your holy eyes
You left behind you on the table
the milk and honey and the bread
and while I watched I saw your oceanic body
enclose the dream at play
Wave and pebble, spume of sea spray,
hot days of summer that were mine
and I never took from you a single tear drop
to bathe with in the bitter cold
I give you thanks I give you thanks
you were a child like Jesus was
