Hi Annie,
Welcome to the list.
My simple advice would be no glasses no work. I cannot work out why
safety glasses would be contraindicated in epilepsy as I cannot work out
how such glasses would physiologically affect his condition. I know of
several people with epilepsy who wear glasses for visual defects,
ordinary sunglasses etc.
There may be issues of reflection/ glare especially if the remployee has
photosensitive epilepsy. Also, if work processes cause a strobe effect
this may affect his epilepsy.
In my opinion it would not be a reasonable adjustment to allow someone
with epilepsy to not wear safety glasses if there was an identified risk
of foreign objects/ splashes etc entering the eye.
Best wishes

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Safety glasses in Epilepsy
Good morning.
Please could any of you out there help?
I have recently joined a company providing Occ. Health to several
industrial sites and am new to this website.
An employee at one of the factories i am responsible for, states that he
cannot wear safety glasses due to him being an epileptic. My senior
nurse has never heard of this being a contra-indication, so i am
appealing to the masses, to see if anyone has come across this and for
any advice.
Thank You,
Angie Sendell, RN
