Most people here will remember the furore last year when NRC (Ottawa)
announced a restructuring that included issuing unpleasantly worded
redundancy notices to Phil Bunker and Bob McKellar. A number of people
wrote letters of protest and/or organised petitions protesting at the
redundancies and the way they had been handled.
I have just heard from both Phil Bunker and Bob McKellar that they and
Jim Watson have received letters from the President of NRC appointing
them as Researchers Emeritus in recognition of their long and
distinguished careers. "NRC Researchers Emeritus are individuals who
have been at the forefront of their fields and have demonstrated the
dedication, creativity and hard work that lead to the highest degree of
success and excellence..."
This means that they will be provided with space and research support at
at least some level (to be determined) and I hope they will be able to
continue the work that we all value so much. It does at least constitute
the personal recognition that was so lacking in the earlier letters.
I am very grateful to everyone who joined in the actions we took last
October.
