Within the context of the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and
state governments the
Cluster of Excellence 243 "Formation of Normative Orders"
at Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt/Main is funded by the German
Research Foundation (DFG). This interdisciplinary group of scholars from the
Humanities and Social Sciences dedicates its work to the overarching theme
of trying to understand and analyse contemporary conflicts around the
formation of global and regional orders, especially with regard to their
normative dimension (http://www.normativeorders.net/en/). This research
association is to be corroborated by additional professorships. For this
purpose we are seeking internationally established scholars with a
distinctive interest in interdisciplinary collaboration. The following
professorships are to be filled either according to the regulations of
German civil service or according to the equivalent thereof in form of a
regular employment contract.

Department of Philosophy and History, Historical Institute
Associate Professor (W 2) for the History of Science of the Pre-Modern World
Applicants should have a record of original research in the history of
science of the ancient or medieval period. This includes, in particular, the
history of science in cultures outside the Graeco-Roman and European
traditions (such as Chinese, Indian, Near-Eastern cultures or the Islamic
World). Applicants should be able to relate their research to the topics
studied within the Research Cluster by addressing the role of knowledge in
the normative orders of the cultures investigated. Formal requirements
include a PhD degree and substantial research experience beyond the
dissertation. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in
interdisciplinary research constellations and in academic teaching.
Candidates will be expected to teach in German after a period of at most two
years.

A "Habilitation" or equivalent qualifications are required for all W2- and
W3-professorships.
All professors will have access to the funds of the Cluster. Additional
funds can be applied for. Successful candidates will participate in
teaching, but with a reduced load, within the respective institutes and
departments.
