Mmm, thank you, Gordon: that impelled me to actually open my copy of
Update - and read the letter.
How I agree with Jeff's views. There is so much we do which is heroic;
and would that NLH could develop - even at this late stage - more
humility: to learn, not to impose. The critical word is 'partnership'.
Not 'take-over'! I do feel I am badgered by many people who haven't
spent a day at the coal face for more years than I've had hot dinners.
Their 'bright ideas' are inevitably costly (how much to the taxpayer,
i.e. you & me?), and don't function as designed first time. Any
communication is invariably accompanied by a 'we know best' air. How
much has NHS Institute cost, so far? With what result? If they were a
real company, they'd have gone out of business by now!
I am not paid by NLH. So I shall continue to do what is best for my
community, in a way that pleases my community. As my community pay my
salary. Forgive these words of personal independence: I am merely
practising to be a stroppy old lady...wearing purple...
P.S. I'd like to see Hill's report, too: it rather struck me as a last
task before a fatter pension than mine arrives on his mat...

Subject: [LIS-MEDICAL] NLH - a national service, etc.
It is worth opening up your CILIP Update this month. Letter of the month
goes to Jeff Skinner for "NLH - a national service, delivered locally?
But accountable to whom?"
The title reflects the content of the letter (which is more than can be
said for some of the letters I have had published !). This is a topic in
which some of us are interested (to put it mildly!), but the
dispassionate style of the letter may attract others who have previously
been put off the debate.
Gordon.
