Hello Everyone,
Recent changes to our IT systems have enabled a universal password,
wherby the same login details give students access to their confidential
personal data, email account, file storage etc.
We are therefore reviewing our security policy with regards to requests
from students off-campus for resetting or issuing passwords. Many of
these requests are sent from personal email addresses because students
cannot access their University email account if they have forgotten
their universal password. Our policy is not to send confidential data
to a non University email address so we reset back to the original
password issued on enrolment, and provide a 'password hint' in the hope
that will jog memories. Requests via telephone are progressed if
students can confirm personal details that we check against their
library record for example postcode or mobile phone number.
I'd be interested to hear how other university's deal with this area. I
will collate any information received anonymously and share with the
group.
Regards
Julie Brett
