Gerry,
Thanks for the notification of the Hoover's Connect
service. I'd also like to bring CapitalIQ's service
to the attention of anyone who doesn't know about it.
I speak as a former client of the service.
It built a 'degrees of separation' model using work,
academic and social networks to show how you, or
someone in your organization, was connected to another
individual or organization. A wonderful 'who knows
whom' tool and a joy for sales and marketing staff.
However one concern was that junior people in a
company would see that one of their executives knew
someone deemed useful at another company and use that
knowledge as their introduction, often without letting
their own executive know that the contact was being
made. The service also allowed individuals to create
their own network, which could be shared with a closed
group, determined by the group owner. As the vendor
relationship director in a financial services' company
I used it to create a network of vendor staff, vendors
who were clients, and relationship staff within my own
organization - a great quick reference tool.
These people networking features in informationn
products are extremely useful for business researchers
and show that many of our vendors are looking
intelligently at how to use the data in their
warehouses.
