Subject: Request for contacts, suggestions
I am a Canadian researcher who's been engaged for the past four years in
research examining the experiences of mothers with disabilities. In
particular, I'm interested in the intersections between mothers'
experiences and social institutions both formal and informal. These
include family, informal support networks, government policy and
funding, children's services, and the legal system. The Canadian women
I've interviewed have spoken about barriers to their parenting from the
moment of becoming/seeking to become pregnant forward - from home-care
policies that will only service clients but not their children, to
playgrounds and childcare centres that are inaccessible, to child
welfare workers who often act as agents of surveillance as much as
agents of support. I draw comparisons between mothers' narratives and
government and agency documents, as a way of identifying gaps in service
or ironies in policy.
I intend this summer to begin to broaden this research to a comparison
with the UK. A policy scan done to date indicates that Britain appears
to be far ahead of Canada along a number of axes (accessibility, plain
language, levels of funding). That being said, of course, policy does
not mean that practices follow suit. Thus, I would like to interview
British mothers with disabilities (physical, cognitive, learning, and
mental health disabilities) about their experiences of parenting.
If any of you have suggestions for recruiting, agencies you think I
should be contacting, or could pass this email on to mothers who you
know, I would be very grateful!
Best regards,
