Call for papers, 2008 Institute of Australian Geographers Conference 29 June to 3 July, Hobart, http://www.geol.utas.edu.au/IAG/
Un(iquely) Australian? Geographies of environment and sustainability
Supported by the Environment and Sustainability Study Group of the IAG
On this occasion of the 50th anniversary of the IAG, and in light of the much longer history of geographical engagement with Australian environments, it is apposite to reflect, critique, explore and project on the contribution of geography to knowledge about environments and sustainability.
What, if anything, makes Australian geographies on environment and sustainability unique? How do critical discourses of environmentalism and critiques of Australia’s handling of sustainability issues relate to notions of nationalism, myth and belonging?
Abstracts are invited on environmental history, culture-nature approaches to various “environmental” issues, and Indigenous and non-Indigenous knowledges and management practices that have impacted on, or may impact on, environments in Australia. While encouraging a range of topic areas, this call for papers is urging contributors to think about what it means to be researching their topic given previous geographical engagements with Australian environments, what is unique/different or comparable with international geographical studies, and their work fits with critical thinking on environments and sustainability.
Please submit abstracts of up to 250 words to Phil McManus at [log in to unmask] by Thursday 20th March (immediately prior to Easter).
