FYI: I had the same problem when I upgraded from RHEL 4.5 to CentOS 5.1. I
had to add the following to my xorg.conf file:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
From my X log file it said that stereo was not supported by composite.

Robert,
to me it sounds that at least part of the problem may be that your graphics
driver is broken. If it is the NVIDIA proprietary one, just install it
again.
(One reason why that could happen is that a few weeks ago RHEL 4.5 was
updated
to 4.6 . This might have replaced some of the driver files.)
HTH,
Kay
