Masters By Project in Computer Animation (MA/MSc)
National Centre for Computer Animation, Bournemouth University, UK
Since its first MA course started in 1989 the reputation of the NCCA for pioneering high-quality postgraduate education has been based on running taught postgraduate programmes aimed at people who are already qualified in art & design or programming but have little experience of using 3D animation or effects software.
In 2005 we started to run a new MA/MSc programme - the Masters By Project in Computer Animation - designed for people who already know how to use the software or have computer graphic programming experience, but want to spend time developing their knowledge and skills further by producing animations, digital effects sequences or software at a Masters level.
The programme is designed for people who have recently competed an undergraduate programme or who have been working in industry or independently, and would like to study for an MA or MSc qualification by exploring their own creative ideas in a personally managed project.
Here are some comments from recent graduates:
“The course was valuable to me personally, as it allowed me to work on personal development that my professional life did not have room for. It was valuable also in that I was able to intensively work towards a Masters' degree with only a year's interruption in my career. I was also able to gain experience in various areas like motion capture and pipeline development that will directly help me in decision-making should I become a manager.”
“The course was important for someone like me who already had a solid grounding in other areas of visual effects production and had a quite specific list of areas that I wanted to explore. The open ended nature of the course allowed for that scope. So unequivocally, there was no other course that was suitable for someone like me.”
“After being in production environments for a few years, a year seemed like a luxurious amount of time. But it seems that the very reasons I did the course were the reasons why the year was going to go very quickly - basically I had a deficit of self exploration in my creative and professional life and one year would be barely enough to check in again.”
The programme is led by Dr Stephen Bell, who started using computer graphics as an artist in 1978 and has nearly 20 years experience of supervising postgraduate and undergraduate projects at the NCCA. Students’ personal supervisors are drawn from the full range of the NCCA staff including Fine Artists, Animators, Digital Effects designers and Graphics Programmers. The staff can support a broad range of types of project.
