Actually, the first time I heard Jean Ritchie sing was easily 45 years ago on what I recall was her first trip to the U.S., at St Joseph's University in Philadelphia. I recall two things about that concert:
1. I was so entranced and transported by her singing that I actually saw an aura around her head (you mentioned nutters on Mudcat; do I qualify?).
2. She sang - as a break from the traditional songs - an Elvis Presley imitation. As I recall, it was well done.

Whatever, it's a fabulous song. I must have been about 17 the first time I ever heard Jean Ritchie and hearing traditional singing was a completely new experience to me. She had turned up unannounced at a folk club in Liverpool, sang just that one song, and absolutely devastated me. Yes. She sang from the floor and when she'd finished I had to get up off the floor.
