Sorry for the typo, the Sharp autobiography was published in 1933. It IS a
good story though.

Although he later abandoned it, Sharp made use of a phonograph for some of
his fieldwork - see the anecdote (in Fox Strangways & Karpeles, Cecil Sharp,
1938, p. 43) about Sharp sitting alone with a woman making a recording 'when
suddenly she stopped singing and, turning deathly white, announced that she
heard her husband approaching, and as he was of a jealous disposition she
was afraid he would kill Mr Sharp.' Sharp turned the situation round by
telling the suspicious husband 'I've got your wife's voice in a box'.
Reportedly, the suspicious husband was so delighted when Sharp played the
recording back that 'he forgot to kill him, and they became great friends.'

Yes, of course. Sharp eschewed sound recording technology, even though it
was newly available during his lifetime.

HI Marge
These are not field recordings but recordings we have made using Sharp's
field notes. The exception is the extract from Louie Hooper which can be
heard on our 'Somerset Sisters' CD. If you want to hear samples of the songs
go to www.cdbaby.com

Hi Folks,
The February edition of Worlds of Trad Internet radio is now
uploaded, will be on-line until Wednesday March 12th, and features the very
best in traditional folk, ethnic, world, roots, blues, old time country and
early jazz; in fact traditional music from absolutely everywhere.
This months exotic extravaganza shows us why George Lewis and Ralph
Stanley were big in Japan; the innocents of Dingwall Primary School mull
over the gory remnants of Casey the Cowboy; theres a bundle of returned
lover ballads from Sam McGee, O.J. Abbott and Roscoe Holcomb; The Kessinger
Brothers, Humphrey Lyttleton and Andy Cohen take us up the Mississippi and
down the Chesapeake; Jean Ritchie, Christine Tyrell, The Coon Creek Girls
and Marta Sebestyn take flying lessons; John Petters and James Campbell
breathe new life into a hoary old chestnut; theres some good old Yankee
fiddlin; some good old Irish jigs and reels; some more of those risqu piano
blues, and much more besides. In fact, if you want to know why Hannah
Johnson had to sell her Big Jack Ass, and how much she got for it, youre
just gonna have to log on to Worlds of Trad.
