India Office Private Papers Cataloguers
The British Library, St Pancras, London
Fixed-term contract until 31 March 2009
Salary from £21,058 p.a. + excellent benefits
The India Office Private Papers contain personal archives of individuals
connected with India from the time of the East India Company (1600-1858)
through to the India Office (1858-1947). We now wish to improve access to
two of our large collections by cataloguing them in detail: the papers of
Robert Clive (1725-1774), who was instrumental in transforming the East
India Company into a territorial power; the archives of Mountstuart
Elphinstone (1779-1859), soldier and civil administrator and a perceptive
observer of Afghan and Indian customs and culture.
You will be responsible for cataloguing one of these collections in
accordance with national and international standards while maintaining an
appropriate balance between output and detail. You will have a degree and a
post-graduate archival qualification or considerable experience of
cataloguing in a professional environment. This is an opportunity to work
in a world-class organisation while learning about Britain and the East
India Company’s relations with Asia, and one of these interesting
personalities who played key roles in that story.
