Dear All
Further to my request for information about Teaching Archival Research
Skills in the Higher Education Sector.
Other than one dissertation (by C. Dacks) no-one appears to have written
anything. There's a full summary below.
I'd like to thank all those who responded - I needed a proper
bibliography for my dissertation and couldn't find any 'archive'
professional literature (lots from librarians). I was worried in case I
was missing something obvious.
Several of the respondents wanted someone to write something! I'll wait
until I get my paper back later this year and see if it's worth working
into something for the Journal
Again, many thanks
Teresa
* All the archival research sessions that were referred to are
'orientation' or 'how to' sessions (i.e. which databases to search, how
to search the NRA or local catalogue, how to order material, how to find
the archive reading room)
* There does not seem to be any wider use of archives to teach
transferable skills such as interpreting primary sources. I inherited a
really interesting session for social science students on qualatative
analysis from my predecessor - if anybody is delivering a similar
session I would be very interested to compare notes.
* I could only locate one paper on Using University Special Collections
in Teaching - by Catherine Dacks (very kindly supplied by Dr Jessica
Gardner)
* The vast majority of research skills literature focuses on Information
Literacy in the context of Library or Information Technology support for
students
* Some museum literature has been written about 'Object-based learning'
In HE this means content being provided for courses by curators (who are
perceived as content specialists).
* Several people replied, citing school children, teaching archivists,
or teaching librarians about archives. This wasn't what I was looking
at for this particular paper.
* Watch out for the next issue of ARC which will focus on Education and
Learning!
