"I guess I'm unclear. are you planning to weigh briefcases etc when someone
enters the room and then when they exit? and determine if something has been
added by the weight differential?"
I think the issue is more probably in relation to the weighing of issued documents - thus determining if the searcher in question has secreted something about their person, probably in a remarkably cunning fashion, by checking the weight of the documents before and after issuing.
The problem with that option, however, is that any machine sensitive enough to determine if as much as a sheet of paper is missing is sensitive enough to mark changes in weight caused by positioning of documents and the like.
You know, I think I've probably got the wrong end of the stick here, but with weighing issued documents rather than the user's baggage, there's the possibility that security can be maintained without risking offending the public - though I note that archival security measures are not only reasonable but necessary, but often the user doesn't take well to the implication that they, personally, are not trusted, even though the Archivist may well not know them from the Man in the Moon.
