1.1. Staffing. We welcome Maren Kurz who is providing maternity leave
cover for Mel Fox until towards the end of this year.

2. Association events

2.1. Second call for papers and abstracts for  ALT-C 2008: Rethinking
the digital divide
9-11 September 2008, Leeds, UK
Submissions deadline: 29 February 2008
Proposals should address up to three of the conference dimensions:
global or local; institutional or individual; pedagogy or technology;
access or exclusion; open or proprietary; private or public; for the
learner or by the learner. For more detail on these, see:

Some projects or teams will have more to report in September 2008 than
they can summarise in an abstract written in February 2008. To take
account of this, the Co-Chairs of the Conference Committee emphasise
that: "in judging proposals, ALT Reviewers will take an understanding
attitude regarding proposals referring to or reporting on work taking
place between now and the date of the conference".

2.2. Second Life in real life: education beyond the hype (due to popular
demand). Thursday 23 October 2008, National College for School
Leadership (NCSL), Nottingham, led by Dr Steven Warburton, King's
College, London. The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants
to immersive 3D environments from a practical perspective and to
stimulate critical inquiry into the possibilities that massive
multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) offer learning and teaching

2.3. Bidding and winning: the secrets of successful learning technology
project bids (due to popular demand). Thursday, 29 May 2008. National
College for School Leadership (NCSL), Nottingham. Presenters: Jeff
Haywood, Vice Principal Knowledge Management, Chief Information Officer
& Librarian at University of Edinburgh; Seb Schmoller, Chief Executive
at ALT; and Mark Stiles, Head of Learning Development & Innovation at
Staffordshire University. Project bids are time-consuming and should not
be undertaken lightly; this workshop will give tips on how to avoid
wasted effort and dashed hopes. Three experienced learning technology
project managers, who have run projects with funds from the JISC and
other sources, and who have judged bids written by others, will share
their perspectives on writing convincing bids for funds.

3.1. Futurelab. Share your stories of learner voice initiatives.
Futurelab is looking for examples of *learner voice initiatives* to be
used in an Educational Review on learner engagement. Please email your

3.2. The Learning and Teaching Institute (LTI) announce the commencement

3.3. Learning Sciences Research Institute (LSRI) is inviting application

3.4. High Tech - Low Carbon. By 2020 it is predicted that ICT and
consumer electronics will consume 45% of domestic power. ICT is
therefore unique as both a major consumer of energy and an enabler of

of technology in tackling climate change" analyses why and addresses the

6. Invitations to tender

6.1. New section on HEFCE web site detailing ITTs for HEFCE and JISC for
work to be carried out on a contract basis.

6.2. JISC invites applications from smaller publishers for support to
obtain assistance from the JISC Publisher Access Management Support
Project to enable them to join the UK Access Management Federation by
becoming a Service Provider (SP). This application process is for those
interested in receiving support from the JISC Publisher Access
Management Support Project, with the aim of establishing their own SP,
NOT to become a provider of such support. The project will provide
practical technical help in implementing an SP. No financial grant will
be provided to successful publishers. JISC will provide publisher
support to successful proposals from 17th March – 31st July 2008.

6.2. JISC invites tender proposals to support those projects are
considered suitable candidates for transformation into services to
develop plans for service implementation. The services under
consideration are:
· GeoCrossWalk
· High-Level Thesaurus Project (HILT)
· Information Environment Service Registry (IESR)
· CiteBase
Funding of up to £40,000 (inclusive of VAT and travel and subsistence)
is available. The project should run from 20th March 2008 to 31st May
2008 with the development of plans completed by 30th April 2008 and any
remaining work on advising JISC completed by 31st May 2008. Deadline for

6.3. JISC invites institutions (see below for eligibility) to submit
proposals for a number of small-scale pilots to support institutions in
their response to staff and student expectations of flexible, convenient
and time-saving access to institutional systems through "Web 2.0"
technologies and mobile devices. Total funding of up to £300,000 is
available to fund four small scale pilot projects (at £50,000 per
project) and a separate project which will support the pilots,
synthesise the lessons learned and produce institutional case studies
(£50,000 for the project plus £50,000 for the case studies). Deadline

6.4. HE Academy
HEA is pleased to announce the 2008 e-learning research call is now
available and funding to a maximum of £30,000 per project is available
for up to 6 successful projects. This years call themes are:
