I believe you are incorrect.
"Vilification" is not a legal term in
the US. Also, in the US, libeling others
is a civil not a criminal offense. That
means unlike violent offenses (better
known legally as "crimes"), which can
result in jail, the punishment for libel
and slander is limited to fines.
I don't understand what this has to do
with the academic study of magic.
