Names are an important aspect of western magic. Spirits had to be
commanded by name, if the spirits were considered infernal this was
usually done by calling upon Christian divine powers. Grimoires supplied
the names of the spirits and which Christian formula controlled them. In
contrast familiars, which were provided by spirits, were named by the
magician.
