Project Archives Assistant for the ‘Visual Waterways – A Photographic
History of Britain’s Canals’ cataloguing project
Salary: £13,000
12-month post
The Waterways Archive, Gloucester holds the largest collection of inland
waterways-related material anywhere in the UK. Our holdings include the
archives of British Waterways and early canal and river navigation
companies dating from the 17th century to the present day. Until now only
our paper-based records have been catalogued and made publicly available.
The Waterways Trust, supported by funding from the Pilgrim Trust and Esmee
Fairbairn Foundation, is undertaking a cataloguing project that will make 3
designated photographic collections publicly accessible for the first time.
We require a project archives assistant to help open up the photographic
history of Britain’s canals. You will participate in the sorting and
cataloguing of the photographic collections, the repackaging and boxing of
material and the promotion of the completed catalogues. We offer
professional development opportunities, a unique working environment and
the opportunity to be part of a small team.
Some previous experience of archive work, particularly cataloguing, is
required, and those planning to pursue a career in archives are very
welcome to apply. Excellent communication and IT skills are essential.
