Hello,
In reply to Teresa Doherty's (The Women's Library) message regarding
copyright and the Directory; reports of my departure are premature, I am
still with the project.
The Directory of Photographic Collections in the UK project is still going
strong, and while we are not ready to publish just yet, we are in the
process of collecting and adding entries to it. Initially we are covering
the London area and when completed the rest of the United Kingdom. Before we
publish, aspects of the website have to be modified and pages added - in
particular the Resources Page (which has very little information at present,
but will eventually include links to major museums, libraries, archives,
photographic sites, conservation, and other useful directories worldwide)
and The Guide to Photographic Processes (which will show the major processes
since the 1830s to the present - this will include an example of the process
and descriptive text).
I find it interesting that the Directory is being used, at least by Theresa
and hopefully when published by others, as a means of verifying the names of
photographers and studios. Certainly one aspect of the Directory is to try
and get this type of information where possible - though of course this is
very much dependant on the names of photographers and studios being as
important to the institution as the subject of photograph, so that it is
added to the catalogue entry - this is not a criticism but a reflection that
historically for some institutions the photographer as creator is not
important, though this is beginning to change. On the Resources Page there
will be links to websites such as George Eastman House catalogue, National
Portrait Gallery, The Database of 19th Century Photographers and Allied
Trades in London: 1841-1901 (not yet published), Photographers &
Photographic Studios in Derbyshire, England, and Geelong & District, to name
some of the interesting websites out there, which list photographers.
Re: copyright, we are not providing information on this, but on the
Resources Page we will be linking to websites that will give this information.
If anyone is interested in looking at the Directory or being a part of it go
to
http://directoryphotographcollections.ac.uk.virtualservers.ch/beta/pub/apps/login/
you will see a password is required to login, please e-mail me and I will
provide one. I don’t want to give it here as I am interested in knowing who
is looking at the website.
When we are ready to publish a message will be posted on this site.
Best,
Bob
