Be Part of the Europeana - the European Digital Library

The beginning of the month saw the launch of Europeana as the new name of the European Digital Library, and of the demonstration website at www.europeana.eu <file:///\\www.europeana.eu> .

Planning is now under way for the next phase of development - and is starting with a survey for organisations interested in making their content available to the prototype service that will be launched in November. The EDLNet project team are particularly interested in hearing from museums and archives, as well as from libraries, and are offering a chance to win an iPhone!. To watch the demonstration and complete the survey, just follow the link from the www.europeana.eu <file:///\\www.europeana.eu> website.

Design, D H Lawrence and Oriental history collections recognised as outstanding

Three of the country's most exceptional collections, covering literature, design and Oriental history, have been awarded Designated status by the MLA to acknowledge their significance and quality.

The D H Lawrence collection at the Hallward Library, the Museum of Domestic Architecture and Design's Silver Studio collection and the Egyptology and Chinese collections held by Durham University Oriental Museum are the latest to receive the award.

Roy Clare, MLA Chief Executive, said: "These collections are among the best in the country and the Designated status marks this quality. Designation not only raises the profile of outstanding collections such as these, but allows the sector to improve standards by providing high quality services for visitors, sharing advice and expertise among institutions and lending objects to enhance access."

Museums urged to dispose of 'burden' collections

The Museums Association has urged museums to consider disposal of parts of their unused collections. Launching the MA's Disposal Toolkit Sandy Nairne, MA Vice-President and Director of the National Portrait Gallery said: "Museums must use their collections for the benefit of today's public, while ensuring they are well-managed and sustainable for the future. Occasional responsible disposal of items will be increasingly important."

The MA's Disposal Toolkit helps museums to undertake responsible disposal. This normally means transfer of items to more suitable museums, but in exceptional circumstances may mean sale. The MA is urging the museums to make their collections more dynamic and to include disposal as a routine part of collections development, alongside acquisition.

Mark Taylor, MA Director, said: "Museums typically collect a thousand times as many things as they get rid of. Wonderful collections can become a burden unless they are cleared of unused objects."

Call for lots for 2008 TopLots eBay auctions

TopLots is a unique opportunity for museums, libraries and archives to raise funds and profile in a worldwide marketplace. Development Partners, the organisation behind the initiative, invites organizations to suggest irresistible, unusual and bespoke experiences to offer for auction on eBay.

In 2008 there will be five themed auctions:

* May: Museums and galleries (to coincide with Museums & Galleries Month)
* June: Historic houses, castles and gardens
*       June: Transport and steam
*       September: Performing arts
*       October: All heritage

The pilot TopLots heritage auction, that took place in October 2007, raised just under £30,000 of 'new money' for museums and heritage organisations, large and small, across the country.

The pilot included lots from 61 organisations across the UK. The heritage experiences offered included 'behind-the-scenes' tours; meet-and-greets with curators, celebrities and famous families; participation in re-enactments; and unusual skills workshops. Successful bidders came from around the world.

This new fundraising venture is run by fundraising specialists Development Partners in partnership with the Association of Independent Museums (AIM) and eBay for Charity, working closely with VisitBritain.

For more ideas and information, and to register your interest, go to www.toplots.co.uk <file:///\\www.toplots.co.uk> . Deadline for registration: 31 March 2008.

Applications invited for Their Past Your Future 2 grant scheme

Projects that promote a better understanding of 20th century conflict are invited to apply for a grant from a £420,000 Their Past Your Future 2 (TPYF2) fund. TPYF2 is the second phase of this hugely successful Big Lottery Fund programme. The MLA's TPYF2 grant programme is open to museums, libraries and archives in England for projects that include work focused on children and young people and/or inter-generational learning.

The second year of the MLA's grant programme opened on 20 February 2008. The deadline for applications is 23 May 2008. The ceiling amount for a single project request for funding from MLA is £10,000.

Go to www.mla.gov.uk/programmes/their_past_your_future <file:///\\www.mla.gov.uk\programmes\their_past_your_future> for further information about the scheme and how to apply.

TPYF2 is led by a partnership of MLA, The Imperial War Museum, Scottish Museums Council, Northern Ireland Museums Council and The National Library of Wales. It is supported by the Big Lottery Fund.

Riding to rescue vital record of English medieval knights

The export of a 13th Century roll of arms, crucial to the study of medieval English knighthood, has been put on hold.

Culture Minister, Margaret Hodge, has placed a temporary export bar on the Dering Roll, a decorated manuscript roll of arms on vellum. This will provide a last chance to raise the money to keep the roll in the United Kingdom.
