2.3. The Lab Group Open Day
20 February 2008, 10.45 – 16.15
Oracle’s City of London Building
The Lab Group is an Association for Learning Technology-supported
collaboration between labs which undertake research and development in
learning mediated by technology. This second Lab Group Open Day is
generously sponsored by JISC, with facilities on the day provided by
Oracle. The Open Day will:
* enable around a dozen member labs to showcase some of their work,
discuss the concepts that lie behind it, answer questions about it, and
get feedback on it from other labs;
* give participants from policy-making and funding bodies to keep
abreast of developments, and improve their understanding of what is
going on in the development and research community.
There is no charge for attendance, and you can book, and access the
programme from http://www.alt.ac.uk/. Booking deadline 11/2/2008.
2.4. Second Life in real life: education beyond the hype. 17 April 2008,
National College for School Leadership (NCSL), Nottingham, led by Dr
Steven Warburton, King's College, London. The aim of this workshop is to
introduce participants to immersive 3D environments from a practical
perspective and to stimulate critical inquiry into the possibilities
that massive multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) offer learning and
teaching practice. For further information and to book a place to
attend, please visit:
http://www.alt.ac.uk/events.php .
2.5. Bidding and winning: the secrets of successful learning technology
project bids (due to popular demand). Thursday, 29 May 2008. National
College for School Leadership (NCSL), Nottingham. Presenters: Jeff
Haywood, Vice Principal Knowledge Management, Chief Information Officer
& Librarian at University of Edinburgh; Seb Schmoller, Chief Executive
at ALT; and Mark Stiles, Head of Learning Development & Innovation at
Staffordshire University. Project bids are time-consuming and should not
be undertaken lightly; this workshop will give tips on how to avoid
wasted effort and dashed hopes. Three experienced learning technology
project managers, who have run projects with funds from the JISC and
other sources, and who have judged bids written by others, will share
their perspectives on writing convincing bids for funds.

6. Invitations to tender
6.1. Short online e-facilitation course: call for author
ALT sponsoring member the Centre for Excellence in Leadership
(http://www.centreforexcellence.org.uk/) is developing a short
e-facilitation course for its own facilitators. Design length is 5 -10
hours so that it can be completed within one week. The course will be
delivered on-line, and will not be cohort-based, so simulations of some
on-line activities will be required. You will require a good knowledge
of e-facilitation and processes and have experience of writing both text
and interactive exercises for screen-based delivery. Knowledge of VLE
features (preferably of Moodle) is essential and experience of
facilitating on-line is an advantage. To express an interest contact Sid
Verber on [log in to unmask] To review the
specification for the course see:
http://www.alt.ac.uk/docs/CEL_efacilitation_proposal.pdf [26 kB PDF].

The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) invites proposals for the
following:
TASK A - the synthesis of project outcomes from relevant activities and
programmes within the JISC e-Learning Programme which will include
synthesising reports and documentation from several projects, writing
supplementary material, liaising with project managers, practitioners
and institutions who participated in the projects as well as liaising
with the supplier working on Task B. The main deliverable will be the
synthesis of materials for the three publications to be delivered by
July 2008 and March 2009. It is expected that this will require 80-100
days over the period April 2008 to March 2009. Funding of up to £30,000
is available for this work.
TASK B - the design and production through to print of the following
publications building on the style of the ‘Effective Practice’ guides
and reflecting the JISC visual identity guidelines:
* an effective practice guide to e-portfolios;
* an overview of the Design for Learning Programme;
* a rewrite of the current JISC Effective Practice with
e-Learning (2004) guide.
It is estimated that TASK B will require 100 – 120 days’ work over the
period April 2008 to March 2009 and funding of up to £60,000 is
available for this work. Funding for both activities will be
commensurate with the effort proposed in the tenders. The total cost

within institutions and throughout subsequent alumni interactions. This
study will explore both UK further (FE) and higher education (HE) sector
and international experiences in this area, define the stakeholder
community and determine their key concerns. The main deliverables from
this study will be:
i. A report describing the current state of student relationship
management policies and activities, including an appraisal of how ICT is
being used to support processes, at each stage of the student lifecycle;
ii. Source material and stakeholder analysis for the development of
comprehensive, targeted advice and guidance to the sector;
