Subject: Doctoral studies
Dear Frank,
As mentioned on the phone I am studying the Doctorate of Social Work, part time at VUT with Carolyn Noble. This is a new course that is work-based and the research topic needs to be related to the workplace.
It is early days, but I am interested in researching the UK model of Self Directed Services. I heard Simon Duffy give a seminar last week funded by DHS Disability in partnership with National Disability Services Peak on the SDS model that has been piloted in UK for the past 4-5 years. DHS Disability are obviously interested and have rolled out the individual planning and support policy here which is aligned but not the full model. I don't as yet know who else is researching this topic and would be interested to know:
a.. who is the main contact at DHS Disability who can inform me of current policy orientation to this model?
b.. who is currently, or is about to, research at post graduate level on this topic?
I am interested in theoretical and practice concepts of "individual and community empowerment", citizenship, human rights as played out in this model. It might be interesting to contrast impacts in Aust and UK and/or any other country that is implementing this approach.
I am looking forward to meeting you on Monday 3, and chatting with you about this. I would very much value your knowledge of this field and any contacts that could help.
Cheers, Ro
