Hi Liz
I wonder if you're aware that Hampshire County Council Museums Service has an in-house exhibition, 'Cutting Edge: A History of Human Hair'? The next venue is the Willis Museum, Basingstoke (19 Jan - 19 April). Unfortunately most relevant hair objects from the Hampshire Museums collections are currently on display. However, a visit to the exhibition might give you inspiration and some ideas! The exhibition was conceived and co-ordinated by Nick Suffolk, the HCCMAS exhibitions officer.
All the best with your project.

I wonder if you can help me?
I am currently developing an exhibition called 'Hair Culture' at Birmingham
Museum and Art Gallery. The exhibition will use the stories of Birmingham
people to explore hair and identity within the city's diverse communities
over the last 50 years. I am currently sourcing possible object loans for
this exhibition and would be interested to find out if you can think of any
objects you have in your own collections relating to the following,
especially in relation to Black and Minority Ethnic communities (we hope to
borrow some of these objects from local communities but I would like to
find out what other museums have just in case!)
styling products (e.g. shampoos, gels, creams, colourings)
styling appliances (e.g. razors, clippers, hairdryers, straighteners,
hotcombs)
accessories (e.g. hair extensions, afro combs, Asian hair jewellery)
hair coverings (e.g. tams, headscarves, skullcaps)
hairdresser/barber shop objects (e.g. barber chair, freestanding hair
dryers, weave machines, signs, barber pole)
cultural/ethnographic objects showing hair traditions (e.g. African
carved figurines)
objects that show popular culture influences (e.g. music, celebrity) on
hairstyles e.g. reggae, Bob Marley, punk, celebrities with iconic
hairstyles e.g. David Beckham, Diana, Twiggy, Bo Derek etc. These could
be CDs, badges, t-shirts, posters, DVDs, videos, caps, etc
Please let me know if you can help. I can be contacted at this email
address or on the phone number below.
The exhibition runs from the end of July to mid November 08.
Many thanks
Liz
