I find the idea of intermittent bus lanes interesting. My initial gut reaction was that there would be difficulties with the other motorists. At the time when you want to turn a particular section of road into a bus lane, there will already be other motorists in that section who have to be dealt with (i.e. chased out of that section, without other motorists entering into that section). It strikes me that there would be some interesting legal issues as well as functional issues and public education. I shall definitely have to read up on the concept, as provided by links by Pedro Abrantes and Chris Cherry:

Yes, one difficulty is the "foot in the door" concept. Once motorists are allowed into some areas, it will be harder to justify why they should be kept out of other areas.
