Subject: An online University Master’s Program for Translators into Italian
resident outside Italy

If you are a translator or potential translator into Italian and you live
outside Italy, this is a unique opportunity to obtain a high-level
specialization and a leading position in the premium segment of the
international market in the field of technical and scientific translation
into Italian.

The Universities of Bari, Genoa, and Pisa, in cooperation with the ICoN
Consortium Italian Culture on the Net, issue an Online University Master’s
Program in Technical and Scientific Translation from: English, French, and
German into Italian in the following domains: Law, Economics, Engineering,
Computing and Localization,
Bio-medicine and pharmaceutical sciences.

The Master’s Program is inspired by the Guidelines for the European Master
in Translation issued by the Directorate-General for Translation of the
European Commission and pays special attention to institutional translation
for the European Union.

The Master’s program is issued by:

1. scholars expert on online and face-to-face didactics of technical
and scientific translation, in particolar in the domains of economics and
law;
2. high-level professional translators expert on translation of texts
concerning technology, computer science, and bio-medicine.

The teaching assistance offered is intensive and complete.

Enrollees will have at their disposal an exclusive web-based software for
assisted translation and will be guided towards the use of CAT tools:
translation memories, glossaries, term extractions and, upon request,
suggestions from a computer aided and machine translation system.
Translations done by the attendees will be revised by teachers and
qualified translators who will guide participants towards production of
professional texts according to the market requirements.
Coherence control and quality of texts produced will be revised by experts
on Italian linguistics.

The Master’s Program is open to:
1. undergraduates (Italian laurea di I livello or equivalent foreign
qualification (BA, etc.)
2. with advanced knowledge of written Italian (near native) and very good
knowledge of English
3. resident (also temporarily) outside Italy.

The Master’s Program is equivalent to 60 ECTS (European Credits Transfer
System) credits.

Enrollees will be offered the option to partecipate to classes of technical
and scientific translation from English into Italian (main option), or from
French or German into Italian (secondary option), in 3 of the 6 domains
offered. If they prefer to do so, enrollees can choose to concentrate only
on English into Italian translation, in 4 of the 6 domains offered.

The Master’s Program will last one year (March 31, 2008 – March 26, 2009)
in case of full-time participation, and two years (March 31, 2008- March
26, 2010) in case of part-time participation (this second option might be
more suitable for translators who are already working in the field).

In both cases the program includes 2 week face-to-face sessions (full time
option: March 31- April 4, 2008 in Genoa; September 22-26, 2008 in
Brussels/Pisa; part-time option: March 31-April 4, 2008 in Genoa, March 30-
April 3, 2009 in Brussels/Pisa).
The remaining mode of delivery will be online tutoring.

Enrolments will be open until February 20, 2008. The cost is of €5,000 for
the full-time option and of €3,000 + €3,000 for the part-time option.
Fees are paid in instalments over the Master's period.
Those who will take part into the 2 week face-to-face sessions will benefit
from a discount of €500 if living in Europe and from a discount of €1,000
if living outside Europe.
