You may need to try various options in order to do this, as there are no tools
in SPM for building a template without first having some reference space
defined. Perhaps you could use an image of a single individual as an initial
template, spatially normalise a number of other individuals to match this,
and then average the spatially normalised images and smooth slightly. This
would not be an average shaped template though, so you would need to select a
very representative individual.
If you had MR data of humans, then it would be possible to do more. In
principle, the DARTEL toolbox can be used to create average shaped templates,
but this requires tissue class images (grey matter and white matter) to work
with.
