There are some good reasons to stay with 3D (and perhaps even hdr+img
pairs)
* writing speed: SPM usually works volume by volume (or even slice by
slice) when writing data. This process is faster when an entire 3D file
is written compared to writing parts of 4D file.
* incremental backups: If you only modify some data (e.g. header
information, some of your volumes) then your incremental backup may be
faster for smaller files.
* 4D support: There have been some fixes to SPM 4D support, but it is
still largely untested.
